Lemongrass Basil “Mojito” Tea Cocktail Recipe

We’re cheating a bit by calling this a mojito. A true mojito is a rum cocktail sweetened with sugar and flavored with muddled mint and lime. In our version, we steep Teatulia’s Lemongrass Herbal Tea in vodka and pour it over muddled basil and lemon sweetened with mild agave. It achieves the same flavorful and thirst-quenching effect as a traditional mojito, only with a unique herbal tea twist.

Teatulia Lemongrass Herbal Tea is a blend of citrusy lemongrass and earthy bay leaves. It’s refreshing and invigorating and has a bold lemony sweetness. Infused in a smooth, flavorless vodka you can spike any of your cocktails with a citrus-flavored, tea-inspired twist. This recipe makes two cups of the vodka infusion so you can experiment with cocktails beyond just the mojito.

Lemongrass Basil “Mojito”

Adapted from a recipe by Tea Foodie.

Makes 1 cocktail, plus 2 cups lemongrass-infused vodka to make more cocktails later

Ingredients:

For the lemongrass-infused vodka:

For the mojito:

    • 1 sprig fresh basil leaves
    • 1 thick lemon slice, halved
    • 1 teaspoon agave nectar
    • 1½ oz. lemongrass-infused vodka
    • Soda water
    • Highball glass
    • Ice cubes

Preparation:

For the lemongrass-infused vodka: Remove tea leaves from the pyramid tea bags. Pour vodka into the pint jar. Add the tea leaves, seal the jar, and shake to combine. Let the jar sit at room temperature to steep overnight. Strain and discard the tea leaves. Clean out the jar and return the infused vodka to the jar. It will keep for months, sealed, at room temperature.

For the mojito: Add the sprig of basil leaves and one lemon slice half to a highball glass. Using the handle end of a wooden spoon, muddle the ingredients together for about a minute; this will help release the flavor of the basil leaves. Add the agave and infused vodka, fill the glass with ice, and top with soda water. Stir to combine. Place the other half of the lemon slice on the rim of the glass and start sipping.

Tips:

  • The longer you can let the lemongrass steep in the vodka the better, because the more lemongrass infused flavor you’ll achieve.
  • You can also try this method with the more traditional rum instead of vodka and lime and mint instead of lemon and basil.
